Good nutrition makes for healthy bodies and healthy minds. Challenger students are offered healthy and nutritious meal choices for breakfast and lunch on our campus daily. The meals are provided by the San Diego Unified Food and Nutrition Services department and follow the nutrition guidelines prescribed by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. We serve whole-grain rich products; low fat and fat free milk; 100% fruit and/or vegetable juices; and a variety of fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Food and beverages brought to school should be nutritious, low in fat, and low in sugar content. Energy drinks such as Red Bull, Monster, and sodas are not allowed.
In addition, our school participates in the Garden to Cafe program where the EcoSquad grows organic fruit and vegetables. As the harvest allows, the food is made available for the cafeteria to use for student meals.
Free Meals Available for Curb-side Pick-up 12:00-2:00 PM
Drive up in front of the school on Parkdale Ave to pick up a free lunch and a free breakfast to save for the next day. On Thursday and Friday, extra meals are provided to be used on the weekend. No paperwork is needed. Please bring your child with you or a photo of the child must be shown during meal pick-up.
Free/Reduced Cost Meal Program - San Diego Unified School District participates in the National School Meal Programs. Even though meals are currently free, we ask parents to complete the meal application. The school receives Title I funds to support students who qualify. In order to receive these funds, we must have a minimum number of students. The online application is located here.
If/when we return to campus, as these are federally subsidized programs, your child may be eligible to receive free or reduced-price meals. The online application is located here. Paper applications are normally sent home on the first day of school and are available in the front office. Families may apply at any time during the school year, especially if their economic situation changes mid-year.
