In Memoriam

Story CornerStory Corner
Gareth Story was a well-loved, dynamic teacher who passed at a young age.  The Story Corner, where classes can gather in an informal setting to study and read, is named in his honor.  Challenger students are reading to Hickman students on Dr. Seuss' birthday for Read Across America (right).

Kathy's Place
On Monday, December 5, 2011, Challenger staff, friends, and family held a dedication ceremony honor Kathy McLaughlin.  As Challenger's second library media teacher from 1999-2008, she devoted herself to making the library the hub of the school.  She had been an elementary teacher at three different elementaries, librarian for several public branch libraries, and the Young Adult Librarian for the City of San Diego, but her favorite place was Challenger Middle School.

Kathy McLaughlinKathy's educational background included two masters degrees and seven teaching credentials and was a tremendous resource to the school.  Her experience in the classroom was also an asset to teachers when they needed help finding curriculum resources.  She constantly networked with colleagues across the district and state to promote reading and libraries.  One of her talents (and joys) was matching just the right book with the student.

Her goal was to make Challenger's library the best in the district.  In her quest for books, she would review books in her free time just get them at no cost to the school.  All the local booksellers (new and used) knew her by name and would arrange special deals for her.  In the nine years she was Challenger's librarian, she increased the size of the collection by thousands of books in a time when library book budgets were slashed to bare minimums.  She was a master of creative solutions and making connections in order to receive donations for the school.

She passed away in February 2011 from complications of scleroderma.  Her former office will now be known as Kathy's Place.  Donations honoring her will help expand the collection.
