Good Neighbor Help Us Be a Good Neighbor

  • Please do not park in front of someone's driveway. It is illegal and could cause a problem when someone needs to leave their home.
  • Please do not honk your horn.
  • Please respect other people's property.
  • Please save bottles and trash to throw away in proper receptacles.

Traffic Safety Tips

  • Be patient and courteous.
  • Students must be dropped off and picked up at the curb.
  • Please use the designated 3-minute drop-off zones for dropping off and picking up your student.
  • U-turns are illegal in front of the school.
  • Students and parents must use the crosswalk or cross at the light.
  • Please follow the directions of the crossing guard.
  • It is illegal to drive on the wrong side of the street. Please instruct your student to cross the street to meet you at the correct side of the street.
  • Allow extra time for traffic congestion, especially during inclement weather.

Ways to Reduce Traffic Congestion

  • Arrange a drop off/pick up point that is 2-3 blocks from the school and out of the major traffic routes.
  • Create a carpool.
  • Students can walk or ride a bicycle, skateboard or non-motorized scooter to school. Studies show that childhood obesity is on the rise. What a great way to get some extra exercise! (And save some gas money.)
    • Walking to School - Students should pay attention to their surroundings and traffic. Wear only one earbud/headphone in order to hear and look up from your phone.
    • Bicycling, Skateboarding, or Scootering to School - California State Law says that students must wear a helmet. Students also need a lock to secure their bikes. skateboards or non-motorized scooters in the bike rack.
  • Drop off early - Students can arrive early to wait in the Shuttle Court.

Street Safety Tips for Teens - from the San Diego Unified School District Police Department

  • Encourage your teen to work to and from school in groups of two or more whenever possible.
  • Plan safe routes to and from school ahead of time and discuss with your teen safe alternate routes.
  • Request that your teen text or call you upon arrival to school, home, or any other destination to confirm they arrived without incident.
  • Encourage your teens to use streets that have a high volume of vehicle and pedestrian traffic and avoid short cuts such as dirt paths, alleys, and side streets.
  • Teach your teens to be aware of their surroundings at all times paying attention to strangers approaching in vehicles or on foot.
  • Teens should avoid being distracted by their cell phones, headphones, and other electronic devices when walking in public. These devices should be put down in increase awareness of approaching vehicles and strangers.
  • Teens should also be aware of others who may be distracted, and speak up if they see someone who may be in danger.
  • If your teen needs to use the cellphone, instruct them to find a safe place to alk, and avoid using the cell phone while walking.
  • Teach your teen to listen to their intuition and take an alternate route if they encounter a situation that does not seem right.
  • Instruct teens to report any suspicious activity and/or persons they encounter, to the school administration or call School Police at (619)291-7678 or 911 in the event of an emergency.
  • When out at night, teens should walk in groups, walk along well lit streets, and avoid poorly lighted side streets.

Tips on Child Safety and Security for Parents and Guardians

They are simple, common sense suggestions that will help keep your children from being easy targets for a criminal. These are things you should do in various situations, an what you should teacher your children to do and not do when they are on their own. May apply in more than one situation.

Going To And From School

  • Go with a friend. Not walk, bike, or wait at the bus stop alone.
  • If you are going to walk alone, call someone, and just have one headphone in. While on the phone, if you see someone you don't know, describe the person to who you talking to until you are safe unless something happens. Or have it ready, so you can tell Siri to call 911.
  • Do not wear headphones in both ears so you can hear someone walking up behind you and you can hear the sounds arounds you such as an approaching vehicle.
  • Do not have your head down when walking, look around. If there is someone you are approaching who you don't know, try to remember all you can about them such as height, weight, clothing, hair, etc.
  • Stay in well-lit areas. Avoid shortcuts, deserted or abandoned buildings, and dark or isolated areas. Be alert and aware of their surroundings.
  • Observe all traffic rules.
  • Turn around and run to the nearest safe place if a person appears to be following on foot, or a vehicle slows or stops near you. Run away from danger, never toward it. Safe place would be neighbors' or friends' homes, businesses, offices, etc.
  • Don't approach any vehicle unless you know the people in it.
  • Do not hitchhike or accept a ride from anyone unless you have told them it is okay in each instance. Tell them to say "NO" and run to a safe place if offered a ride by a stranger.
  • Instruct your child never leave school with anyone they don't know. Establish a simple code word to be used if someone your children don't know comes to pick them up. Remind them about the word periodically and tell them not to accept a ride or go anywhere with anyone who does not know the code word. Stress that this word must be kept secret.

If you need to report a traffic problem at the front of the school, you may call SDUSD School Police at 619-291-7678.  San Diego Police may be called for other traffic issues at their non-emergency line at 619‑531‑2000 or 858-484-3154.  For problems with traffic light timing, etc., please contact the Street Division for the City of San Diego.
